I'm Not Dead Yet

Nope, this blog isn't dead yet. It's just been on hiatus while I try to carve out a bit more writing time. I still like the idea, and still expect to get back to it.

In the meantime, gentle reader, may I suggest that you try the highly esteemed Patio Boat blog, the home for all your beagle-haiku needs.

What Is "Science-Story Science Fiction?"

This is just a little place where I can post a few stories. The idea is that each story will be based on a genuine science news story. It doesn't need to be slavishly based on the story. It just needs to have its genesis there.

The source stories could be from the Science Times in each Tuesday's New York Times, from Science Friday on NPR, from a popular science magazine, or even from a genuine peer-reviewed science journal. For now I think I'm going to start out by pulling one item a week from the Science Times.

I got the idea from my father-in-law, Arsen Darnay. He's mentioned a few times that he and a friend of his used to write a short story per week based on something they would see in the Science Times. A weekly quota seemed to me to be a good way to build a bit of writing discipline, so that's what I'm going to aim for.

For now, I'll just publish on this little blog. If it gets unwieldy, I might one day create a bit more of a web site. But this should do for now.

If you're reading this, I hope you're enjoying the stories.

P.S. If you're reading this, and you want to post a story of your own on here, shoot me a note and a copy of the story. Really all that I ask is that:

1) Your story must be based on a genuine science story. Please include a citation and a link.

2) That it be good. It doesn't have to be great, but I will try to enforce some minimal level of readability around here.

3) That it not be too terribly explicit in terms of language, violence, or sex. In movie terms, it doesn't have to be G-rated, but let's try to stay away from an NC-17.
